Numerology is a form of divination. If you are not aquainted with any divinatory arts, please read my divination disclaimer.
Numerology is the theory that everything can be reduced to nine baic numbers, and with these numbers you can determine the probable outcome of a situation. This theory was founded by the greek Prothagryus in about 1105 CE. But without diving into history, let's get on to how to use numerology in you're life.
Below is a basic numerological table. It explains how to convert any word or number to one of the nine basic numbers.

Let me explain. Say, for example, that you're name was Bob Smith. You're name number would be 7. Confused? It's really not that difficult. First you write out the name:
Bob Smith
The next step is to find the numerilogical values of each letter in the name:
B o b S m i t h 2 6 2 1 4 9 2 8
Now add the numbers together:
2+6+2+1+4+9+2+8=34
And finally, add the result numbers together:
3+4=7
It's as simple as that!
It is also possible to figure you're birth number with numerology. For instance, if you
were born on June 11, 1962.
Write out the date in numbers:
6 11, 1962
Then figure normally:
6+1+1+1+9+6+2=26=8
You're birth number would be 8. Note it is very important that you do not forget the 19 in 1962, because there are still people who were born in the late 1800's, and the 2000's are rapidly approaching.
The birth number can be a very useful tool. Many witches pick their craft name based on thier birth number, so that they are perfectly aligned with thier own astrological birth point. With this in mind, it may be even better if you could find you're exact time of birth to add to the number sequence.
To pick a craft name that aligns with you're birth number, pick a name, any name you like, and check it's name number, if this number is the same as you're birth number, then it would make a good craft name. If the two numbers are not equal, either alter the name you choose so that it does fit yet still has the same pronounciation (for example Merlin = 8, but Merlyn = 6), or pick a different name alltogether.
In order to use numerology for divination, you have two be given a specific information. Here is one scenario:
You are Sally Jones. You Boyfriend, Rick Albertson and you have just decided to be married. You know that the marriage stands a good chace of surviving, because you're birth numbers match. Now you can use numerology to help you decide on a name for your children, where to live, what date to have the marrige cerimony on, and even what color drape to have in your house!
As you can see from the above example, numerology goes far beyond the uses I have explained here, and there are many books available on the topic. One great numerology book is Numerology: The Complete Guide by Matthew Oliver Goodwin. Reading this book or others like it will help give you a more full understanding of the topic than I can provide here, since there are many charts, tables and numbers to work with.
